July in Kyoto is a magical time, and nothing captures the city’s spirit more than the Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival) — one of Japan’s most famous and historic celebrations. At KARTENA KYOTO, we want to help international visitors experience this vibrant tradition while also taking care of your well-being during this busy season.

What is the Gion Festival?
The Gion Festival dates back over 1,100 years and is held throughout the month of July. Originally a religious ritual to ward off plagues, it has evolved into a lively cultural event featuring towering floats, traditional music, and bustling street festivities.
The festival is centered around Yasaka Shrine and involves the entire city, filling the streets of Kyoto with a sense of excitement and tradition.
Highlights of the Festival
🏮 Yamaboko Junko (Float Processions)
On July 17 and 24, the massive floats called Yamaboko parade through the streets. These floats, some as tall as 25 meters and weighing several tons, are beautifully decorated with intricate tapestries and craftsmanship passed down for generations.
🌌 Yoiyama Nights
The evenings before the processions — July 14–16 and 21–23 — are called Yoiyama, when the streets come alive with paper lanterns, food stalls, and festival-goers in yukata. This is a perfect time to wander and soak in the festive atmosphere.
🎶 Music and Tradition
Listen to the traditional festival music called Gion-bayashi, performed by children and musicians on the floats. The rhythm and sounds create a truly unique Kyoto experience.
Tips for Enjoying Gion Matsuri
- Arrive early: Crowds can get very large, so plan to secure a good viewing spot for the processions.
- Stay hydrated: Kyoto’s summer heat and humidity can be intense.
- Wear comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking and standing a lot.
